Independent review for: Sussex Born and Bred

Sitting down with Sussex Born and Bred is like spending a couple of hours at a really good pub when the local storyteller has stopped by for a pint of the local best; drink in hand, he begins to regale listeners with tales of adventures and misadventures, describing with good humor and a large measure of affection his interactions the townspeople all around. This is one of the most charming, delightful, endearing, and funny collection of anecdotes it has ever been my pleasure to read. Askaroff is an insatiable collector of stories, and as a traveling repairman, the kind who actually makes house-calls, he has been invited into more households than the pope, and he's probably done more practical good.

Alex Askaroff gave up a safe, lucrative career to do what he loved: fixing the sewing machines still in use along the south coast of England, tending to ailing Singers, Husqvarna, Bradbury treadles, even industrial machines used by farmers for sewing leather. Many of these sewing machines are irreplaceable antiques that have been used for decades by the same family - often by the same "old dears" - Askaroff's affectionate term for some of his regular clients. With self-deprecating humor, he recounts how he has sometimes played the inadvertent fool, sometimes the hero of the moment, and how the life stories of these men and women are endlessly surprising.

If you loved the books by Gerald Durrell, from My Family and Other Animals through Fillets of Plaice, here you can discover a kindred spirit, one whose passion is for, not animals, but machines, and the people who use them with love and skill. Descriptions of locales, photographs, even original poetry grace these stories, and most of them are ideally suited to share with children and other family members.
